The
Brief
RSP started work on Australia by setting up the previsualisation department and spending time supervising on location around Australia.
The team completed over 150 shots on the film, including animating cattle for the drove sequences, and creating realistic environments for the camp sequences.
The effects were primarily used as supporting element to the story, designed to pass in the background without the audience noticing.

The
Creative Process
To extend the onset cattle herd with up to 5000 digital cows we developed our own crowd system called Posse. A library of cow animations was created and the system allowed the herds to be assembled for the exact needs of each shot. The system had the ability to remove performances that were not working from the current camera angle while making successful actions more prominent.
A lot of conceptual work was created to lock down on the look and feel of the environment in the different sequences. This guided the look & development of the visual effects shots. Digital Matte paintings were projected on to geometry to create the backgrounds for a number of the scenes which were shot in a studio on a greenscreen. These shots had to blend seamlessly with the other shots in the film and also exist correctly continuity-wise whilst not distracting from the story.
