The
Brief
RSP were awarded the action sequence where Ninjas battle Samurais in a surprise night-time attack. Temp VFX shots were turned around in the first weekend of the project, to ensure
that VFX Supervisor Jeffrey A Okun & Director Edward Zwick could
get a feel for the timing of the sequence as soon as possible.
The effects that RSP
contributed had to be believeable, and pass by unnoticed
so that the audience concentrated on the main action of
the sequence – which was a spectacularly choreographed
action sequence that stood out as one of the best [and scariest]
in the film.

The
Creative Process
The development of the sequence saw the use of a Blood Dictionary,
which allowed RSP & the production team to communicate
the types of horrific wounds and blood spurts that various shots
would require.
In addition to adding blood, RSP also were tasked with removing
the blood from an actor’s collar to ensure it didn’t
detract from the scene.
Whilst RSP spent weeks developing the effect, the shots
in the movie pass by unnoticed, just as they were intended.
