The Brief

RSP's first collaboration with Dreamworks saw more than 100 shots completed over a 12 month period.

The primary task was to create CG photorealistic animated vines (including
the rendering of over 140,000 leaves). The work also incorporated CG arrows, additional gore, complex compositing. With a team of 76 artists split between the Sydney and Adelaide offices, RSP created significant pipeline tools which allowed for the management of the complex project.
The Creative Process

We took a practical approach to animate the foliage attached to the main 'vine' character. Our layered animation toolkit allowed us to mix bone animation derived from various sources including key-frame animation and simulation driven vertex animation.

The animation pipeline developed to tame the film's main character was quite complex. The vine character had hundreds of leafs and flower attachments that had to bounce, sway, collide and perform in a believable and controllable way. Our layered animation plug-in 'Anim Layers' allowed us to cache, read and layer animation at different stages of a leaf's performance. 'Mesh Driven Bones' were used, utilising a 3rd party cloth simulation system to produce leaf on leaf and leaf on ground collisions for the character. The system mapped vertex animations back to skeletal animation which was advantageous to use these results in a skeleton based animation pipeline.
