A different kind of Magic
Rising Sun delivered around 70 shots on The Sorcerer's Apprentice in a relatively tight turnaround time. The complexity of shots ranged from a complex facial morph, through to 'searching' digital smoke, and a translucent mirror wand which creates a magical hiding spot in the ground.
TIt was a great situation whereby the team had direct interaction with the Director, to ensure that we got a very clear direction. The Director and VFX Supervisor always had a guiding principle that they wanted everything to be grounded in reality. It was to be more mechanical rather than being invisible.

Morphs are back...
At one stage in the film, Rising Sun was asked to morph from one live action face to another. when the evil wizard's apprentice transforms. It was a quite complicated shot because it involved us 3D-tracking a face mask to the source and destination—and then doing a transformation in 3D with texture projection. So, we would project the actual live footage back onto the model, some of which we had to create using a skin shader. We also created a digital hair extension so that the transition was done partially digitally. There is an awful lot of detail for a key moment in the film.
