Sinners Artist Spotlights

Rising Sun Pictures’ work on Sinners is led by the film’s extensive twinning sequences, with the team focused on creating photoreal moments where Michael B. Jordan could convincingly share the frame with himself. The goal was realism over spectacle, with every composite shaped to feel natural, grounded and completely integrated into the camera‑captured world. By preserving lighting, skin texture, eye lines and physical interaction, RSP’s artists crafted twinning work so seamless that critics called it some of the finest visual effects ever put to celluloid. Sinners is now nominated for 16 Academy Awards including Best Visual Effects.

Meet Samantha Maiolo, RSP Compositor on Sinners and one of the talented artists featured in our Making the Movie series. In her episode, Samantha walks through her role on the project, from organising footage to managing the huge volume of shots moving through the pipeline. Her work balancing dense, invisible effects and crafting grounded composites helped keep the film’s visuals seamless on screen.

Also featured is Guido Wolter, RSP's Oscar‑nominated VFX Supervisor on Sinners. Guido breaks down the team’s methodical approach to the twinning sequences, including the unique challenge of creating believable moments where Michael B. Jordan fights himself. He reflects on the importance of strong communication across the entire Sinners crew and how building trust with both Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan shaped the final look of these complex scenes.

Meet Tyson Donnelly, RSP's Comp Supervisor, who shares some of his favourite moments from the production. Tyson dives into the challenge of replacing stunt doubles and building composites that still read unmistakably as Michael B. Jordan. His team navigated a careful balance of continuity, clarity and performance to help bring the twinning work to life.

From the CG department, Naeem Chudawala, CG Supervisor, talks about the excitement and technical challenge of bringing a CG Michael B. Jordan performance to life. It was a blend of precision, intuition and cross‑department collaboration to ensure every digital detail supported both emotion and storytelling.

Rounding out the series is Olivia Mitchell, RSP Compositor, whose refined eye for detail helps bring final shots together. Olivia blends elements seamlessly to enhance mood, clarity and story flow, and she shares her favourite moments working on Sinners in her behind‑the‑scenes spotlight.
