Rising Sun Pictures and UniSA Partnership: Empowering the Next Generation of Visual Effects Professionals

The collaboration between Rising Sun Pictures (RSP) and the University of South Australia (UniSA) has become a benchmark for industry-academic partnerships, delivering outstanding results for aspiring visual effects (VFX) artists. By blending RSP’s state-of-the-art studio environment with UniSA’s comprehensive academic foundation, students graduate equipped with the skills and industry experience necessary to excel in the competitive world of visual effects.
Two recent graduates, Jock Carr and Ella (El)Crossland, are shining examples of how this partnership transforms passion into professional success.
From Aspiring Storyteller to Junior Artist: Jock Carr’s Journey
Jock Carr’s journey into the VFX industry began long before his formal education. “In high school, I was always bending the curriculum to create 3D models and short films,” Jock recalls. His passion grew as he experimented with After Effects, recreating online tutorials to enhance his videos.
Jock’s first taste of RSP came in 2018, during a brief work experience placement. “Shadowing each department was an eye-opening opportunity, and I left wanting to become an artist.” That experience solidified his career aspirations, leading him to research pathways into the industry.
While initially pursuing a Bachelor of Film and Television, Jock transitioned into UniSA’s Bachelor of Visual Effects during his third year, seizing the opportunity to immerse himself in RSP’s purpose-built facilities. “The chance to study in RSP’s education facilities was invaluable. I got to utilise the same tools and software I now use as an artist, while being taught by industry professionals.”
Beyond technical skills, the program’s integration into RSP’s studio environment was a game-changer. Students were encouraged to attend industry events, from masterclasses to informal social gatherings with professional artists. “The transition from student to artist felt effortless,” Jock notes. “The entire learning experience is designed to prepare you for production.”
Since graduating, Jock has worked as a Junior Lighting Artist, refining his skills in RSP’s pipeline. Recently, he moved into Look Development, gaining hands-on experience with exciting new projects. His advice to aspiring artists is clear: “Remain flexible, open to learning new workflows, and leave your ego at home. Marketing yourself with a strong, readable showreel is also crucial.”
Looking ahead, Jock aspires to build his skills and one day become a lead and supervisor. “I feel incredibly lucky to be in my current position and am grateful for the support I’ve received from my lecturers and peers at RSP.”
El’s Path to Production Success
For El, a passion for film and performance led her to UniSA’s Bachelor of Film and Television program, where she first learned of the opportunity to study at RSP. “It only took one look to know I wanted to start there,” she says.
El’s journey into the VFX industry began in her second year, where she explored courses such as Dynamic Effects, Digital Compositing, and Character Performance. However, it was her experience in RSP’s full-time Compositing and Tracking course that solidified her passion. “I chose Production and Compositing for my student project, locking in my love for the VFX industry,” she explains.
The immersive nature of studying at RSP, where students spent full days in the studio environment, proved invaluable. “You’re there 5 days a week for 8-9 hours, leaving less room for gaps in knowledge. You learn software tips and tricks faster, and there’s more time to fix mistakes without sheer panic,” El says.
El credits the mix of artists and instructors for providing diverse perspectives and problem-solving approaches. Social events, shadowing opportunities, and “day-in-the-life of” presentations further enhanced her experience. “Learning in a studio environment left room to ask complicated questions and get informed answers. It was incredibly beneficial.”
Since graduating, El has joined Moving Pictures Company (MPC) as a Production Assistant. She’s already taken on coordinator responsibilities, gaining valuable experience while pursuing her long-term goal of becoming a producer. Her advice to others is simple yet profound: “Never give up. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”
A Winning Formula for Success
The partnership between RSP and UniSA offers a unique and comprehensive pathway into the VFX industry. Students benefit from hands-on experience in a professional studio environment, access to cutting-edge technology, and mentorship from working artists.
As Jock and El’s stories demonstrate, this program doesn’t just teach technical skills—it builds connections, fosters confidence, and provides a seamless transition into the industry. Rising Sun Pictures and UniSA continue to inspire and empower the next generation of VFX professionals, ensuring a bright future for both the graduates and the industry.
